The Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block: Abdominal plane regional anaesthesia

HISTORY OF THE TAP BLOCK Abdominal field blocks and costo-iliac block have been used in anaesthesia for surgery involving the anterior abdominal wall for several decades. A technique involving multiple injections of local anaesthetic in the abdominal wall was used in the 1980s.1 This technique was improved with a blind landmark technique, via the ‘lumbar triangle of Petit’.2 The clinical effica...

Ultrasound-guided abdominal wall nerve blocks in the ED.

INTRODUCTION The anterolateral abdominal wall is innervated by the T7 to L1 anterior rami, whose nerves travel in the fascial plane between the internal oblique and transversus abdominus muscles, known as the transversus abdominus plane (TAP). Ultrasound-guided techniques of regional anesthesia that target the TAP are increasingly relied upon by anesthesiologists for pain management related to ...

Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Network (PRAN): a multi-institutional study of the use and incidence of complications of pediatric regional anesthesia.

BACKGROUND Regional anesthesia is increasingly used in pediatric patients to provide postoperative analgesia and to supplement intraoperative anesthesia. The Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Network was formed to obtain highly audited data on practice patterns and complications and to facilitate collaborative research in regional anesthetic techniques in infants and children. METHODS We construc...

Regional techniques as an adjunct to general anesthesia for pediatric extremity and spine surgery.

The purpose of this review is to evaluate the safety of regional anesthesia techniques performed for postoperative analgesia in anesthetized children. Pediatric regional anesthesia techniques, such as nerve blocks and neuraxial injections of either local anesthetics or narcotics, can potentially reduce postoperative pain for all children undergoing surgery. However, children may react different...

Ultrasonographic guidance in pediatric regional anesthesia. Part 2: techniques.

The benefits of regional anesthesia are well documented. The downsides of such techniques have been a significant failure rate and a potential for serious complications. Nearly, all regional blocks were first described as essentially 'blind' techniques. The development of high-resolution portable ultrasound (US) has made the use of US for regional anesthesia possible. Improved understanding of ...
